The air flow sensor (meter) measures the mass of air that is entering the engine. This measurement is required so that the proper amount of fuel can keep the operating fuel mixture as close to optimum as possible. The air sensor has a delicate internal flap that can be easily damaged by backfires, or screwdrivers stuck into the wrong places. The air flap is attached to a delicate potentiometer that generates a variable signal that depends upon how far the flap is opened. If this flap is damaged, or becomes stuck, then the computer will not be able to detect the amount of air entering the engine, and performance will suffer greatly.
